In 1935 the founder of Johnson's Wax Company purchased and outfitted a Sikorsky S-38C flying boat. His business was dependent upon carnauba, the hardest known natural wax, the source of which was grown in Brazil. He flew the 'boat' to Brazil and toured the wax producing regions around the Amazon river and its tributaries.
